First things first: As of now, Ohio law does not permit the use or sale of recreational marijuana. However, that could change soon, as cannabis advocates are working tirelessly to pave the way for legalization. So, let’s explore what steps have been taken thus far and what we can expect in the future.
In 2016, Ohio voters had the opportunity to decide on Issue 3, a ballot measure that aimed to legalize recreational marijuana. Unfortunately, the initiative failed to garner enough support from Ohioans, leaving many activists disappointed but not defeated. The defeat didn’t deter advocates, and since then, they have been working hard to educate citizens about the potential benefits of legalizing cannabis for adult use.
Fast forward to 2019, when Ohio lawmakers introduced House Bill 153, also known as the “Ohio Marijuana Legalization Act.” This bill proposed regulating recreational marijuana like alcohol, allowing adults 21 and over to possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis, and setting up a system for licensing growers, processors, and retailers. The bill aims to create a regulated market for marijuana, tax its sales, and address social equity issues by prioritizing licensing opportunities for individuals from communities disproportionately affected by prohibition.
